First caravan migrants reach U.S. border

The first few hundred travelers from migrant caravans reach the Mexican border city of Tijuana, with more expected to arrive in the coming days. round 400 Central American migrants travelling through Mexico to seek asylum in the US arrived at the border city of Tijuana. The group, which includes around 80 LGBT asylum seekers, broke away from the larger caravan of 5,000 people in Mexico City. Larger groups are expected to reach the border in the coming days. The US government said on Tuesday it was starting work to “harden” the border crossing from Tijuana, Mexico, to prepare for the arrival of the migrant caravan making its way across western Mexico. Customs and Border Protection announced it was closing four lanes at the busy San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry in San Diego, California. It said the closures were needed “to install and pre-position port hardening infrastructure equipment in preparation for the migrant caravan and the potential safety and security risk that it could cause.” James Mattis, the Defence Secretary, is due to visit the border on Wednesday, his first trip since thousands of US troops were deployed.
